# A seven-million-rand UK-backed initiative will expand affordable digital connectivity in underserved rural and township communities in KwaZulu-Natal. The project will support 25 local community network operators, providing 250 public Wi-Fi hotspots, connecting 150 public facilities and one-thousand-500 homes. Acting British High Commissioner Lisa Weedon says community operators can help expand connectivity while creating jobs and developing skills. She says the initiative uses a wireless open-access network model and is being delivered through the UK-South Africa Digital Partnership, with support from government and private sector partners.
