Uber expands its autonomous vehicle data collection network

# Global e-hailer Uber is expanding its fleet of autonomous vehicles to collect data. The initial fleet of 50 modified electric vehicles will be fitted with an array of sensors, including cameras, remote sensing systems and radar units. Unlike robo-taxis, the vehicles will be driven by humans and used to gather detailed road and traffic data that can help train autonomous driving systems. The company plans to have the full 500-unit fleet ready later in the year and expects the network to generate 3.2-million-kilometres of driving data each month.
