# Scientists are calling for the urgent protection and restoration of Africa’s seagrass meadows, which support coastal communities by providing food, medicine and raw materials. A Stellenbosch University-led review found major gaps in knowledge about the extent and condition of these ecosystems, with restoration trials conducted in only six African countries. Researchers are urging better monitoring, funding and cooperation with coastal communities to protect remaining seagrass meadows and support large-scale restoration.
