# More than 300 inmates are taking part in the annual Funda Mzantsi Championship in George, Western Cape. The inmates are competing alongside students and community book clubs in reading, debating, spelling and book reviews. Organised by the Department of Correctional Services and the National Library of South Africa, the competition features 12 official languages, with Nama, an indigenous non-Bantu language, also being trialled. Correctional Services minister Pieter Groenewald says the initiative aims to strengthen literacy while supporting inmate rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society.
