# SA Canegrowers welcomes Finance minister Enoch Godongwana’s decision not to increase the Health Promotion Levy, commonly known as the sugar tax, in his latest budget. Maintaining the current rate avoids further harm to jobs in rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga. The organisation’s chairperson, Higgins Mdluli, says the tax has caused significant damage since its introduction in 2018, resulting in 16-thousand job losses and two-billion-rand in lost revenue in its first year:
