# Argentina’s president, Javier Milei, has threatened economic sanctions on any firm involved in oil exploration around the Falkland Islands under the British occupation. The Falklands, in the south-west Atlantic Ocean, remain the subject of a sovereignty dispute between Britain and Argentina, more than 40 years on from an armed conflict over the territory. Milei claims the UK has failed to heed the call of the United Nations not to undertake unilateral actions on the territory, but Downing Street says the sovereignty of the Falklands rests with the UK.
