# AfriForum has welcomed proposed amendments to criminalise illegal mining as a serious offence, with penalties of up to 30 years in prison and fines of 100-million-rand. AfriForum’s Jacques Broodryk says the legislation must target entire criminal syndicates, including financiers, recruiters, buyers, and miners underground. Broodryk says illegal mining is damaging communities, farms, water sources and infrastructure. He calls for stronger investigations, prosecutions and action against officials allegedly enabling the illicit industry:
