Africa’s first Life Pod launches at Tygerberg Hospital to boost organ donations

# Africa’s first Life Pod unit has been launched at Tygerberg Hospital, to preserve organ viability for transplants. Developed by Stellenbosch University students, the facility will address South Africa’s low organ donation rate which stands at just 0.6-percent. It will provide care for brain-dead donors outside of intensive care units and will keep organs stable and healthy until it can be transplanted. The Life Pod is expected to save over 100 lives a year and could pave the way for a national network.
