UN Economic Commission for Africa urges reform of credit ratings that penalise Africa

# The UN Economic Commission for Africa is calling for reforms to sovereign credit rating systems that unfairly limit African nations’ access to affordable capital. Speaking in Cape Town, the commission’s Zuzana Schwidrowski criticised outdated, biased methodologies that ignore Africa’s reforms and resilience. With only two African countries rated investment-grade, she urged stronger local credit systems and transparent global practices. The commission stressed that improved ratings are vital for unlocking investment, boosting fiscal space, and driving sustainable development across the continent.
