# The South African Communist Party general secretary, Solly Mapaila, says they are adamant in participating independently in the 2026 local government elections. The party, which has campaigned for the ANC since South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994, has become increasingly critical of its record in government. Speaking at the SACP’s annual Red October Rally in Klerksdorp, North West, on Sunday, Mapaila said the ANC has failed on many occasions to reconfigure the alliance:
