# Waste management agency Pikitup says its separation at source programme has been a success in the City of Johannesburg, helping to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill sites. The programme supports long-term national targets that require municipalities to recycle 97-percent of waste and landfill only three-percent by 2050. Pikitup has added 41 new caged trucks to its fleet to enhance the collection of recyclable waste. Each year, South Africa generates more than 50 million tonnes of general waste, with only a third being recycled.
