# The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa has reached a settlement with Goodyear Tyres in Kariega plant, regarding retrenched workers. The agreement secures improved severance packages including four weeks’ pay per completed year of service and a lump sum taxable amount from 100-thousand. Numsa general-secretary, Irvin Jim, says the union opposed the plant closure but negotiated to protect workers in a depressed economy:
