Mineral and Petroleum Resources minister Gwede Mantashe says the mining industry must not put profits ahead of workers’ health and safety. Speaking at the mine health and safety summit in Kempton Park, Gauteng, Mantashe said 49 mineworkers had died in the industry by 14 September this year, compared with 41 fatalities recorded last year. He also raised concerns about contract workers and mineworkers who die while travelling to and from work. The minister called for practical measures to achieve the industry’s zero-harm goal.
