Government welcomes release of two South Africans from Equatorial Guinea

# The government has welcomed the release of two South Africans from detention in the Republic of Equatorial Guinea after being granted clemency by the country’s president. Peter Huxham and Frik Potgieter were arrested on 9 February 2023 on fabricated drug charges and subsequently sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment. The spokesperson for the ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, Chrispin Phiri, said the government appreciated the Government of Equatorial Guinea’s continued provision of consular access and the spirit of constructive diplomatic dialogue that has been maintained throughout this period.
