# The European Union says the universal tariffs announced by US president Donald Trump are a major blow to businesses and consumers worldwide. The US will impose a global ten-percent tariff on all imports into America, with even higher tariffs for 60 countries, including South Africa, that have a high trade deficit with the US. European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, says they are preparing for further countermeasures to protect Europe’s interests and businesses if negotiations fail:
