# The death toll from Typhoon Kalmaegi in the Philippines has climbed to 66, while thousands have fled their homes. A state of calamity has been declared in the hardest-hit province of Cebu, which has recorded 49 fatalities. Most of the deaths were due to drowning. Twenty-six people have been reported missing. Kalmaegi, the 20th storm to hit the Philippines this year, slightly intensified as it was crossing the South China Sea today on its way to Vietnam, where preparations are underway ahead of the typhoon’s expected landfall on Friday.
