# Australia is the front runner to host next year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference COP31. This is despite the country’s 43-percent emission reduction target not being aligned with the Paris agreement, which aims to keep global warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius. The government has also yet to announce its 2035 emissions reduction target, well behind the February deadline. Australia’s Climate Change and Energy minister, Chris Bowen, says getting the COP31 host honour would restore the country’s leadership on climate.
