# The ANC has called for unity and compassion as communities in the Eastern Cape begin to rebuild after deadly floods. The party expressed deep sympathy to the families of the over 90 people who lost their lives, including 30 children, and the more than two-thousand-600 residents affected. ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu welcomed the declaration of a state of disaster, urging South Africans to stand together in support of those affected:
