Steenhuisen approves bird flu vaccination policy

# Agriculture minister John Steenhuisen has amended the Animal Diseases Regulations to allow vaccination against highly pathogenic avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu. The move follows concerns raised by the South African Poultry Association over the impact of mass bird culling during outbreaks. Steenhuisen says the new framework will give farmers legal access to vaccination, biosecurity and testing measures to protect flocks and jobs. The department will introduce interim controls aimed at strengthening disease management, safeguard food security and poultry industry sustainability.
