# Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has described the passing of internationally acclaimed South African opera legend, Mimi Coertse, as a great loss to the arts and cultural community. The 93-year-old died at her home in Pretoria. Over a distinguished career spanning decades, she performed in some of the world’s most iconic operas, including Mozart’s The Magic Flute as the Queen of the Night and Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos as Zerbinetta. McKenzie says Coertse was a national treasure and an enduring symbol of South African excellence.
