Philippines braces for major typhoon as storm sparks mass evacuations

# Tens of thousands of people in the east-central Philippines have been ordered to evacuate to safer grounds as a typhoon approaches, with fishermen prohibited from venturing out to sea. Officials warned of torrential rains and potentially deadly storm surges of up to three-metres. Typhoon Kalmaegi was last spotted approximately 235 kilometres east of Guiuan with sustained winds of up to 120 kilometres per hour. It was forecast to slam into shore later today. The typhoon is expected to blow westward overnight, battering central island provinces.
