# Spain’s meteorological agency says the 16-day heatwave the country suffered this month was the most intense on record. The heatwave, which claimed more than one-thousand lives, fuelled wildfires that continue to ravage parts of the north and west of the country. The agency says provisional readings for the 3rd to the 18th of August showed an average temperature of 4.6 degrees Celsius higher than for previous heatwaves. Scientists say the climate crisis is driving longer, more intense and more frequent heatwaves worldwide.
