Cyclone threatens millions on Australia’s east coast

# Millions of residents along Australia’s eastern coast are preparing for the impact of the most southerly cyclone to threaten the region in more than five decades. Tropical Cyclone Alfred is expected to cross the coast just south of the Queensland capital of Brisbane in the early hours of Friday. Residents have stripped supermarket shelves of food and bottled water as authorities issued warnings about potential flooding. Beaches in New South Wales and Queensland were closed with waves of more than five metres expected.
