# The University of the Western Cape says professor Fanelwa Ngece-Ajayi’s journey from growing up in Khayelitsha to becoming a leading scientist shows the power of education, mentorship and community support. Ngece-Ajayi’s research focuses on green nanotechnology, including drug-metabolism sensors, water purification and technologies to fight harmful microbes. She also promotes Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education in disadvantaged communities, drawing on the support she received from her own family, teachers and mentors.
