# Today is the International Day of Democracy, observed under the theme “Bring Human Rights Into Focus”. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit Democracy Index, about 165 countries and territories have some level of democratic classification. United Nations secretary-general António Guterres has emphasised the importance of bringing together people from across societies to enrich decision-making, foster trust, and build more peaceful, inclusive, and resilient societies. He says each time people choose dialogue over division, and cooperation over confrontation, they strengthen democracy.
