# Nine conservation organisations from six Southern African countries have launched the Vulture Safe Zone Alliance to combat the sharp decline in vulture populations. The alliance includes BirdLife organisations in Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe, BirdWatch Zambia, Nature Tanzania and the Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi. Conservationists say poisoning, habitat loss and power-line collisions threaten the birds. Vulture numbers have declined by up to 97-percent in five decades, with six of Africa’s eleven species now endangered or critically endangered. Safe zones cover over two-million hectares.
