# The National Council of SPCAs has been admitted as a “friend of the court” in a Supreme Court of Appeal case concerning the export of horn from captive-bred rhinos. The case could have wider implications for protected species and captive-bred specimens. The NSPCA argues overall animal welfare must be considered and prioritised when authorities decide whether to permit trade. The organisation previously succeeded in challenging lion bone export quotas. It says that rhino welfare cannot be overlooked before horn leaves South Africa.
