Poll finds most SA commuters would make use of train services if they were safe, reliable

# Almost two-thirds of South African commuters would choose trains if services were safe and reliable, according to the latest Commuter Report by the University of Cape Town. The survey found 59-percent of private car users and 62-percent of taxi and bus commuters would switch to rail. But only 0.6-percent of commuters currently use trains, according to Stats SA’s 2025 household survey. Safety remains a major concern, with 41-percent of public transport users fearing for their personal safety. Rising transport costs are also placing increasing financial pressure on commuters.
