# South Africa is set to receive a 16-billion-rand loan from the BRICS-backed New Development Bank to upgrade infrastructure in the country’s eight largest metropolitan municipalities. The funding will be used to improve water supply, sanitation and waste management services. The move comes as the government works to address ongoing service delivery challenges in several municipalities. President Cyril Ramaphosa has acknowledged widespread infrastructure failures and says measures are underway to improve basic services and municipal performance.
