Vatican says Pope Leo has been diagnosed with lung cancer, but had a successful surgery

# The Vatican says Pope Leo had part of his right lung removed, which was found to be cancerous, a diagnosis that preoperative tests had suspected. The 71-year-old pontiff underwent a 90-minute surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital yesterday, which the Vatican says was successful. He was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, a common form of lung cancer. The Vatican says that after the operation, Pope Leo awoke normally and had a brief period of observation before being taken to his room. The pontiff has cancelled all his public events until October 20.
