# University of the Free State lecturer, Nombulelo Shange, says it is concerning that rising xenophobic violence in South Africa increasingly targets African nationals, despite their small population share. Foreign nationals only make up roughly four-percent of the country’s population. Shange says there are bigger challenges in the country rooted in corruption and poor governance, but many bury their heads in the sand and opt to believe the incomplete story that foreigners are the single greatest problem:
