# Tshwane mayor Nasiphi Moya has condemned the ongoing illegal sand mining activities at Soutpan Spruit river in Soshanguve. She says people are mining on the area’s riverside and are selling the sand for 400-rand a load. Despite causing soil erosion and harming the environment by increasing habitat loss, sand mining also leads to water table depletion and decreased water quality and supply.
