# The self-proclaimed mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, will stand trial in the US from June 2028. He is accused of orchestrating the plot to fly hijacked passenger jetliners into New York’s World Trade Centre and the Pentagon in Washington on 11 September 2001, killing two-thousand-976 people. Mohammed and two co-accused had reached plea agreements in exchange for being spared the death penalty, but it was rejected by a US Appeals Court. Mohammed was arrested in 2003 and has been held at Guantanamo Bay since September 2006.
