# Trade, Industry and Competition minister Parks Tau says South Africa will phase out existing semi-knock-down vehicle assembly operations and stop supporting new facilities. Speaking at South Africa Auto Week in Durban, Tau says the government will strengthen definitions of completely knocked-down manufacturing, which uses more locally produced parts. The policy excludes medium and heavy commercial vehicles. The government is also reviewing the automotive production programme to boost localisation, investment, employment, exports and competitiveness. It will also support new-energy vehicle manufacturing and battery recycling.
