SASSA’s automated, digital-only verification system for SRD grant is erroneously excluding vulnerable citizens

# A legal expert says there are concerns that social security agency SASSA’s automated verification system for the Social Relief of Distress Grant is wrongly rejecting applicants. The fully automated application process only allows online applications and uses an automated verification system in which funds in a person’s bank account are a decisive determinant of financial means. Wits’ Centre for Applied Legal Studies’ Busisiwe Kamolane-Kgadima says a fully automated bank verification system, without allowing further information, lacks the necessary context to make an accurate assessment of true financial means.
