# The South African Federation of Trade Unions says that despite progressive labour legislation designed to protect workers, compliance with basic labour laws remains dangerously low. This follows the recent arrest of two employers in Mandeni, KwaZulu-Natal, following an inspection operation by the Department of Employment and Labour. Saftu’s Asive Dyani says the inspection exposed shocking abuses of workers’ rights, including the payment of starvation wages ranging between 12-rand and 17-rand per hour:
