Research highlights impact of negative emotions on social media [SOUND]

# A Stellenbosch University study found that negative emotions may be reinforced among people interacting on social media, with the effect stronger among users experiencing depression. Researcher Kurt Marais analysed more than 12-thousand posts from a depression-focused Reddit community and developed a tool to detect depression-related emotional language. His research found posts increased at night, while exposure to similar negative emotions could intensify them. Marais says the findings could help improve online behaviour:
