# The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research says renewable energy generation from South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme has grown by 280-percent since 2015. The programme, launched in 2010, has been a major catalyst for introducing private sector players in the renewable energy space in the country. The council’s Sipho Mdhluli says embedded rooftop photovoltaic capacity reached six-thousand-800-megawatts in the first half of this year, compared to five-thousand-600-megawatts installed in the first half of 2024:
