Recycling industry rejects ITAC’s scrap metal policy amendments

# The Recycling Association of South Africa, Metal Recyclers Association, and Scrap Recycling Coalition, have condemned the International Trade Administration Commission’s amended price preference system for scrap metal. The three recycling organisations have described the policy amendments as a betrayal of fair trade and economic justice. The changes, including a five-percent reduction in ferrous scrap discounts, are said to favour mini-mills over recyclers, depress scrap prices, and threaten thousands of jobs. Industry leaders warn that the policy perpetuates inequities, accelerates de-industrialisation and seek urgent review and market-aligned reforms.
