# President Cyril Ramaphosa says the United Nations and other global institutions no longer adequately reflect today’s realities and are ill-equipped to address the challenges of the future. Speaking at the BRICS summit in India, Ramaphosa says Africa, which accounts for 54 United Nations member states and nearly one-fifth of the world’s population, remains without permanent representation on the UN Security Council. The president says South Africa has therefore reiterated its call for comprehensive reform of the Security Council to make it more representative, accountable, transparent and effective:
