Pikitup has R2.1bn in reserves but cannot access funds amid Joburg waste crisis

# A leaked report presented to the Johannesburg Mayoral Committee has revealed that Pikitup has more than 2.1-billion-rand in cash reserves but cannot access the funds. The waste collection entity says cash management is centralised by the City of Johannesburg, creating competing priorities. The report recommends ring-fencing Pikitup’s revenue to ensure funds are used for waste collection. Pikitup chief financial officer Litshani Matsila says delaying access to funds affects waste collection and service delivery across the metro.
