Meanwhile, Argentina reinforced their position as the top men’s team in the world currently, by winning their third straight Canada Sevens crown. The Pumas came from behind to defeat New Zealand 36-12 in the final, to tighten their grip on the eight-leg World Rugby Sevens Series. Meanwhile, a hattrick from Portia Woodman-Wickliffe, saw New Zealand beat France 35-19 to win the women’s final for the second consecutive year. Woodman-Wickliffe says the new players in the squad stepped up:
# Golf: Sweden’s Björn Åkesson marked his comeback by winning the Nelson Mandela Bay Championship at Humewood Golf Club in Gqeberha. The 35-year-old retired in 2017 after losing his DP World Tour playing rights and falling out of love with the game. He posted a four-under-par round of 68 to win by one shot ahead of two-time Challenge Tour winner England’s Lee Slattery, after the championship was reduced to 54 holes due to strong winds. Australian Hayden Hopewell posted a four under par round of 68 to finish third on 16 under.
# Cricket: India sealed the five-match Test series against England by winning the penultimate match in Ranchi by five wickets. The visitors squandered a first innings lead of 46 runs by being bowled out for a meagre 145 in their second innings. This set the hosts a winning target of 192 runs, which they reached on the fourth day with five wickets down. England won the first two Tests and India the following three. Indian batter Shubman Gill says the victory means the world to their young team:
# And finally: Soccer: Liverpool defeated Chelsea one-nil to win their tenth Carabao Cup at Wembley, increasing their position as the most successful team in the history of the competition. Virgil van Dijk’s 118th-minute header sealed the victory for Jurgen Klopp’s side in his farewell season. For Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino’s wait for a first trophy in England continues. Klopp says his team was exceptional, especially the young academy players:
