Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with rugby: The Bulls return home today after deciding not to stay in Europe after beating Glasgow Warriors in Scotland in the United Rugby Championship semifinal. They will rather recover in Pretoria before leaving for next weekend’s final against Leinster in Ireland. This will be a repeat of last season’s final which the home team won 32-7. The match will again be played at Croke Park in Dublin. The Bulls are still hoping for a first title after reaching the final four times in the past five years.
More rugby news: Loose forward Phepsi Buthelezi and prop Carlu Sadie have been called up to the Springboks training squad in Johannesburg. The duo will be joined by the Stormers players following their URC semifinal defeat to Leinster. Buthelezi, who plays for the Sharks and made his Test debut against Portugal in 2024, reported for duty yesterday, while Sadie, who plays for European champions Bordeaux Bègles, will join the camp tomorrow. Bok coach Rassie Erasmus is confident Buthelezi and Sadie will slot into the squad with ease.
# Cricket: The Proteas Women are playing New Zealand in Loughborough, England, today in their final warm-up match for the T20 World Cup. South Africa’s first match of the tournament will be against Australia in Manchester on Saturday after Friday’s opening match between England and Sri Lanka at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The Proteas will also face Pakistan, India and the Netherlands in a strong Group One. The group matches will be followed by two semifinals, and the final at Lord’s in London on 5 July.
More cricket news: The England and Wales Cricket Board is investigating a breach of team protocols involving captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson, following Sunday’s conclusion of the first Test against New Zealand. The pair were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when an incident took place. The ECB is currently seeking further information. England introduced a midnight curfew for players and staff after their Ashes tour to Australia, where their players’ off-field behaviour came under heavy scrutiny.
# And lastly, soccer: Somalian referee Omar Artan will miss the World Cup after he was denied entry to the United States. The 34-year-old was forced to fly back to Istanbul, Turkey, after he was turned back at the Miami International Airport. US Customs and Border Protection says Artan underwent additional inspection upon arrival and was determined to be inadmissible due to vetting concerns. FIFA says it is not involved in host-country immigration processes and has been informed by authorities that Artan’s status will not be changed at present.
