Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with Cricket: The knock-out rounds of the SA20 starts today. In the first qualifier, the top-two teams on the log, defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Durban’s Super Giants, will do battle in Cape Town this evening. The winner goes straight through to Saturday’s final, also at Newlands. The loser will face the winner of tomorrow’s eliminator in Thursday’s second qualifier. The eliminator will be played at the Wanderers in Johannesburg between Paarl Royals and Joburg Super Kings, who ended in third and fourth place, respectively.
And in more Cricket: news, the young Proteas are playing India in Benoni, Gauteng, today for a place in Sunday’s final of the Under 19 World Cup. The hosts ended the Super Sixes phase in second place in Group 2 behind Australia, who will play Pakistan in tomorrow’s other semifinal at the same field. India and Pakistan ended in first and second place in Group 1, respectively. The final will also take place at Willowmoore Park on the East Rand. India has won the tournament for a record five times.
# Rugby: The Wales Rugby Union is reportedly in talks with SA Rugby over the possibility of a match at Twickenham in the final week of June. This would also see the Springboks return to the venue where they recorded a 35-7 demolition of the All Blacks in a World Cup warm-up game last year. For Wales, the game would be a warm-up before they take on Australia in a two-Test series in July. According to reports, if the match does happen, it will be held the weekend after the United Rugby Championship final.
# Motorsport: Red Bull Formula One team has launched an independent investigation against team principal, Christian Horner, over allegations of inappropriate behaviour. This comes after a complaint was made against him by a staff member. Horner has denied the allegations. Red Bull says it takes these matters extremely seriously and the investigation will be completed as soon as practically possible. It is understood that Horner will remain as team principal, and in his dual position as chief executive of Red Bull Racing, while the probe is carried out.
# And finally Olympics: Weather experts warn Paris can expect record-breaking high temperatures during this year’s Games. A study about climate simulations to anticipate worst-case scenarios points to a not insignificant risk of a two-week long heatwave that would surpass the all-time record hot spell of 2003 in the French capital. Lead author Pascal Yiou told A-F-P the climate has changed and policymakers should be aware something even worse than 2003 is indeed possible. The Games will be held in the middle of the European summer, from 26 July to 11 August.
