Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with rugby: South Africa and New Zealand will play the final Test of their Greatest Rivalry series at the M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore in the US in September. Two of the first three Tests will take place in Johannesburg, and the other in Cape Town. The Springboks last played in the US in 2018, against Wales in Washington, while the All Blacks played Ireland in Chicago last year. SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer says taking the Boks to new audiences and territories is one of their key objectives.
Meanwhile, Springbok flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu continues to make waves in European rugby and earning a spot as the only South African among the ten nominees for the 2026 Champions Cup Player of the Year. The 23-year-old Stormers player has been turning heads throughout the pool stages of the competition. His leadership on the field and strategic play have helped define the Stormers’ pool stage campaign. Feinberg-Mngomezulu is also shortlisted for the SA Rugby Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards.
# Cricket: Paarl Royals will have an opportunity to fight to make the SA20 final after beating Joburg Super Kings by 36 runs in their eliminator match in Centurion. Lhuan-dré Pretorius scored 51 as Royals posted 210 for five in their 20 overs. In reply, 36-year-old Hardus Viljoen claimed three wickets as JSK were restricted to 174 for eight. Royals will now face Sunrisers Eastern Cape at the Wanderers this evening, with the winner taking on Pretoria Capitals in Sunday’s final in Cape Town.
Meanwhile, the Proteas have been dealt a major blow with Tony de Zorzi and Donovan Ferreira ruled out of the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka due to injury. De Zorzi has not progressed as expected in his rehabilitation from a right hamstring muscle tear. Ferreira sustained a fracture of his left clavicle while playing for Joburg Super Kings in the SA20. The duo has been replaced by Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs. South Africa will kickstart their World Cup campaign against Canada on February 9.
# And finally, tennis: World number one, Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, defeated France’s Corentin Moutet to progress to the Australian Open fourth round, and tie Sweden’s Bjorn Borg for the best Grand Slam record after 100 matches. Russia’s Daniil Medvedev battled past Hungarian Fabian Marozsan. In the women’s draw, Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka overcame Austrian Anastasia Potapova, while Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko claimed a three-sets victory over Denmark’s Clara Tauson to progress to the second week of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.
