Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with soccer: Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams says he is disappointed that they failed to reach their objectives at the Africa Cup of Nations. South Africa suffered a 2-1 defeat to five-time champions Cameroon in the round of 16 in Morocco yesterday. Williams says they did not play to the best of their ability, which is something they need to rectify heading into the World Cup:
Meanwhile, CAF president Patrice Motsepe has announced plans to boost Champions League and Confederation Cup prize money, with amounts to be confirmed after the current Africa Cup Of Nations. Speaking to SABC News in Morocco, Motsepe highlighted that CAF’s 2.4-billion-rand debt has been cleared and praised improved governance. Motsepe emphasised that incentives, development programmes, and ethical management will ensure African soccer grows, inspiring players and fans across the continent:
# Cricket: Joe Root scored 160, his 41st Test century, to steer England to a first innings total of 384 on the second day of the fifth and final Ashes Test against Australia in Sydney. It’s his second century on the tour. Root also shared a 169-run fourth-wicket partnership with Harry Brook. He is now level with former Australian captain Ricky Ponting in third place in the all-time men’s Test century list. At stumps, Australia reached 166 for two, still trailing England by 218 runs, with eight wickets remaining.
More cricket news: Bangladesh’s Cricket Board has formally requested that the International Cricket Council move all their matches for the T20 World Cup, saying the team will not travel to India under current conditions. India and Sri Lanka are co-hosting the tournament, which gets underway next month. Political relations between India and Bangladesh soured after a mass uprising in Dhaka in 2024 toppled then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina, a close ally of New Delhi. The BCB says its request is necessary to safeguard the safety and well-being of players and team officials.
# And finally, tennis: Twenty-four-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic has cut ties with the Professional Tennis Players Association which he co-founded with Canadian player Vasek Pospisil in 2021. The 38-year-old Serb says he made this decision after ongoing concerns regarding transparency, governance, and the way his voice and image have been represented. In March last year, the association launched legal action against the sport’s governing bodies, accusing the organisations of systemic abuse, anti-competitive practices, and a blatant disregard for player welfare.
