Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with cricket: Reigning ICC World Test Champion, South Africa, has defeated India by a massive 408 runs to secure their first series victory on Indian soil in 25 years. Simon Harmer claimed six wickets as the hosts were bowled out for 140 in their second innings of the second and final Test. The Proteas posted 489 in their first innings with Senuran Muthusamy scoring 109. In reply, India were bowled out for 201 with Marco Jansen taking six wickets. In their second innings, South Africa declared on 260 for five.
Meanwhile, South Africa has been drawn in Group D alongside New Zealand, Afghanistan, Canada and the United Arab Emirates for next year’s Men’s T20 World Cup co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The Proteas will begin their tournament against Canada in Ahmedabad on February ninth. Defending champion India is in Group A with 2009 winners Pakistan, Namibia, the Netherlands and the USA. Group B consists of Australia, Ireland, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Oman. Two-time champion England is in Group C together with Bangladesh, debutants Italy, Nepal, and the West Indies.
# Rugby: Top of the log Stormers will probably be without up to six of their Springboks when the United Rugby Championship resumes this weekend, but director of rugby John Dobson believes they have enough depth for Saturday’s clash with Munster in Ireland. The hosts are currently second on the log after five games, with both teams undefeated and on 23 points, but the Cape team has a point difference of 118 to Munster’s 36. The Stormers haven’t won at Thomond Park before.
# Golf: Rising South African star Christo Lamprecht has received a personal invitation from Gary Player to compete in the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City from 4 to 7 December. In his invitation, Player writes it had been an absolute delight to watch Lamprecht’s progress this year and how hard he had worked to earn a place on the PGA Tour. Player adds he is looking forward to seeing Lamprecht at Sun City as he makes his debut in ‘Africa’s Major’ in front of his home fans.
# And soccer: FIFA has altered the 2026 World Cup draw format, which will see the top four seeded countries, Spain, Argentina, France and England, avoid each other until the semifinals. At previous World Cups, the path for teams into and through the knockout phase was decided by which group they were drawn into. The draw, to be held in Washington next Friday, will see 48 teams placed into four pots from which they will be drawn into 12 groups of four teams. South Africa is in pot 3.
