Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with rugby: Springbok assistant coach, Jerry Flannery, says their end-of-year tour will be a great and challenging test for the team. South Africa will face Japan, France, Italy, Ireland and Wales in November. The Boks kick off the tour with a clash against Japan at Wembley Stadium in London on Saturday. With five Tests in five weeks, Flannery admitted the schedule will push the world champions mentally and physically, but believes it’s exactly the type of test the squad needs:
Meanwhile, Japan’s coach, Eddie Jones, doesn’t believe it’s impossible to go one better against the Springboks on Saturday after making the Wallabies work hard for victory in Tokyo last weekend. Australia only won 19-15 after leading 14-3 at half-time. Jones refers to Japan’s famous victory over South Africa in Brighton, England, during the 2015 World Cup. He says the Boks make mistakes when you put them under pressure. Bok coach Rassie Erasmus is expected to name his team his afternoon for the encounter at Wembley in London.
# Cricket: South Africa and Pakistan’s men face off in the first of three T20s in Rawalpindi today after they drew the Test series one-all. The Proteas will be captained by Donovan Ferreira while Aiden Markram is rested, and David Miller sustained a leg injury after being named captain. Matthew Breetzke were named ODI captain. The second T20 will be played in Lahore on Friday and the final one in the same city the next day. The three ODIs will all be played in Faisalabad from next Tuesday.
# Athletics South Africa’s president, James Moloi, has been served with a suspension notice. This follows a report by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee into Moloi’s use of his ASA credit card, particularly a string of questionable costs, including spending at taverns. Moloi has been given until Friday to give reasons why he should not be suspended. ASA says a disciplinary committee will investigate whether any action should be taken against any other official, including the acting CEO and finance manager.
# And tennis: 2023 finalist Grigor Dimitrov marked his return to the ATP Tour after a 14-week absence due to injury, with a straight-sets victory in the first round of the Paris Masters. The Bulgarian defeated Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 7-6, 6-1. 2018 champion Karen Khachanov of Russia cruised into the second round with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over American Ethan Quinn. Britain’s Cameron Norrie has set up a second-round clash with Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz when beating Argentina’s Sebastian Baez 6-3, 6-4.
