Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with athletics: South Africans Puseletso Mabobe and Simoné Kruger both won gold medals on the final day of the World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi, India. Mabote won the men’s T63 100-metres in a championship record time of 12.03-seconds. Kruger, the Paralympian gold medallist from Paris, produced a season’s best 37.39-metres in winning the women’s F38 discus. South Africa finished the championships with four medals, two gold and two bronze, won by Sheryl James and Collen Mahlalela. China topped the medals table with 52.
# Soccer: South Africa sealed its place in the knockout stages of the Under-20 World Cup in Chile with a 2–1 victory over the US. The Americans took the lead through Noah Cobb and Amajita levelled when Joshua Wynder scored an own goal. The turnaround was complete when Gomolemo Kekana slotted in the second goal just before halftime. Despite the defeat, the Americans still advanced as Group E winners, while South Africa finished second on goal difference and will face Colombia in the last 16.
# Rugby: The Lions suffered their second straight defeat in this season’s United Rugby Championship, going down 22-20 to Zebre Parma in the second round in Italy. It looked like Morné Brandon had won it for the Johannesburg-based outfit in the 74th minute. However, a try in the final moments from Matteo Nocera, converted by Martin Roger Farias, saw the Italian side claim a second successive victory in the competition. The unbeaten Bulls top the URC table with ten points, followed by the Stormers and Munster.
# Golf: South Africa’s Richard Sterne says his performance in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews in Scotland feels like he has turned a major corner in his career. The 44-year-old finished joint third with England’s John Parry, with Robert MacIntyre becoming the first local player in 20 years to lift the trophy and Englishman Tyrrell Hatton second. Sterne says after overcoming a debilitating hip injury, this result is encouraging, but there is still more work to do:
# And finally, motorsport: Mercedes driver George Russell claimed a dominant victory in the Singapore Grand Prix – his second of the season. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Lando Norris of McLaren finished second and third, respectively. Oscar Piastri had to settle for fourth, and his advantage over teammate Norris has now been reduced to 22 points in the drivers’ championship. Meanwhile, McLaren clinched the constructors’ championship for the second consecutive year. Russell says he is happy with this victory:
