Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with tennis: World number one Jannik Sinner beat two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz to win his first Wimbledon title. The 23-year-old claimed a four-sets victory against the Spaniard to avenge his French Open defeat last month, and claim his fourth Grand Slam title. He is also the first Italian to win the Wimbledon singles crown. Sinner says winning the trophy is a special moment, adding that he is living his dream:
# Soccer: Chelsea stunned Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 to win the FIFA Club World Cup at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. England forward Cole Palmer scored twice and created a third for new signing João Pedro, as Chelsea earned the title of world champions following their UEFA Conference League victory earlier this year. Palmer, who was named the best player of the tournament, says they proved their doubters wrong:
# Rugby: The British and Irish Lions have called up Irish and Leinster tighthead prop, Tom Clarkson, as additional front-row cover ahead of the first Test against Australia on Saturday. The 25-year-old’s call-up increases the Irish contingent in the Lions squad to 18. Clarkson’s Irish teammate, utility back Jamie Osborne, is already with the squad in Brisbane after being summoned from Portugal as cover for Blair Kinghorn, who injured his knee. English and Saracens hooker Jamie George has also received a call-up.
# Golf: World number 158 Chris Gotterup denied Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy a second Scottish Open title. The American registered a closing 66 to win by two shots, the biggest victory of his career. McIlroy shared second place with England’s Marco Penge. Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard, along with Gotterup, earned one of the final spots for next week’s Open Championship, with a closing 64 that secured him a share of fourth place. Gotterup says it was a pleasure playing against McIlroy:
# And finally, motorsport: Six-time MotoGP champion, Marc Marquez, has stretched his championship lead over his brother, Álex, to 83 points after winning the German Grand Prix. This is the Ducati rider’s ninth MotoGP victory at the Sachsenring, in his 200th overall start. Álex finished second for Gresini Racing with teammate Francesco Bagnaia in third. South Africa’s Brad Binder finished seventh for Red Bull KTM. The next race, the Grand Prix of Czechia, takes place this coming weekend, with MotoGP returning to Brno after a five-year absence.
